SRINAGAR: Social Welfare Department (SWD), SANKALP-HEW Srinagar, organized a community outreach programme at Palpora, Srinagar, to sensitise the community about various issues concerning child protection.
The programme was aimed at strengthening awareness among community members about the rights and protection of children and the need for collective efforts to prevent practices that adversely affect the safety, dignity and well-being of children and families.
During the programme, detailed awareness was provided on the provisions and significance of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, with emphasis on the responsibility of parents, guardians and community members to ensure a safe environment for children. The participants were sensitised about the importance of recognising situations that may put children at risk and the need for timely intervention and reporting through appropriate authorities.
Chairperson, Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Srinagar, who was the resource person at the programme, spoke on the occasion and highlighted the legal provisions and social implications associated with these issues. The resource person also emphasised the role of families and the community in preventing child-related offences and ensuring a safe and supportive environment for children.
The issue of child marriage was also discussed in detail. Participants were made aware of the adverse consequences of child marriage on children’s education, health, personal development and overall well-being. The programme stressed the importance of ensuring that children are allowed to grow and develop in a safe environment and have access to education and opportunities.
The session further addressed the issue of sex-based selection, highlighting the importance of gender equality and equal opportunities for girls and boys. Participants were encouraged to challenge discriminatory attitudes and practices and to contribute towards creating a society where every child is valued equally, irrespective of gender.
The programme aimed to strengthen community awareness and encourage collective efforts towards protection of children, gender equality and prevention of harmful social practices.
The Department of Social Welfare reiterated its commitment to reaching out to communities and promoting awareness about child rights and welfare measures.
