JAMMU: Reaffirming its commitment to protecting the Suryaputri Tawi and promoting sustainable urban development, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) on Friday launched two eco-friendly initiatives at the Tawi Riverfront — dedicated immersion receptacles for religious offerings and a Net Zero Cooling Station powered entirely by solar energy.
The initiatives were inaugurated by JMC Commissioner Dr Devansh Yadav in the presence of Mahants, religious heads, JMC officers and other representatives.
Immersion Receptacles to Help Keep Tawi Clean
As part of efforts to preserve the cleanliness and religious sanctity of the Tawi River, the JMC has installed dedicated immersion receptacles at the Tawi Bridge.
The facility provides devotees with a designated place for disposing of flowers, idols and other worship materials instead of throwing them directly into the river.
The Suryaputri Tawi, revered as the “Daughter of the Sun”, holds significant religious and cultural importance for the people of Jammu.
Officials said the initiative seeks to ensure that religious practices are carried out in an environmentally responsible manner without compromising traditional sentiments.
The participation of Mahants and religious heads highlighted the role of community and religious institutions in encouraging responsible waste-disposal practices.
Dr Yadav appealed to devotees and citizens to make use of the designated receptacles and avoid disposing of religious material directly into the river.
He said protecting the Tawi was a shared responsibility requiring active public participation.
Net Zero Cooling Station Powered by Solar Energy
In another step towards developing a sustainable and visitor-friendly riverfront, the JMC has set up a Net Zero Cooling Station at the Tawi Riverfront.
The specially designed facility provides visitors with a cool and comfortable space during the summer months.
Its lighting and cooling systems are powered entirely by electricity generated through an installed solar energy setup, minimising dependence on conventional power sources.
Dr Yadav said the facility demonstrated how renewable energy and energy-efficient solutions could be incorporated into public spaces while improving visitor convenience.
The cooling station is expected to particularly benefit senior citizens, families, children and other visitors spending time at the riverfront during hot weather.
Focus on Cleaner, Greener Jammu
JMC said the two initiatives form part of its broader vision of combining environmental conservation, public convenience and sustainable development.
While the immersion receptacles are intended to protect the ecological and religious sanctity of the Tawi, the solar-powered cooling station reflects the civic body’s push towards renewable energy and climate-conscious infrastructure.
The Corporation appealed to citizens, visitors, religious institutions and community stakeholders to support the initiatives and contribute towards keeping the Tawi River and its surroundings clean, green and sustainable.
