JAMMU: The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has intensified its efforts to promote scientific dairy waste management by launching a comprehensive awareness campaign on environmentally sustainable management of dairies and gaushalas and the adoption of scientific cattle dung disposal systems.
The campaign, conducted by the Veterinary Section of JMC under the supervision of Veterinary Assistant Surgeon Dr. Divya Sharma, covered dairy units in Janipur, Paloura, Roop Nagar, Muthi, Barnai and Patoli. During the drive, dairy owners were sensitised about environmentally responsible dairy management practices and scientific disposal and utilisation of cattle waste.
Officials encouraged dairy owners to adopt sustainable waste management solutions such as biogas plants, vermicompost units and compost pits. According to JMC, these systems facilitate scientific disposal of cattle dung while converting waste into useful resources such as clean energy and organic manure, helping reduce environmental pollution and improve sanitation.
Dr. Divya Sharma said the Corporation has been implementing measures to regulate dairies and gaushalas in accordance with the guidelines of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the directions of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and the prescribed Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) norms.
She said 100 dairy units have already been registered by JMC after complying with the prescribed environmental standards, including the installation of scientific dung disposal systems such as biogas plants and vermicompost units.
The registration and regulation of the remaining dairy units and gaushalas within JMC limits are being carried out in a phased manner to ensure full compliance with environmental regulations, she added.
Dr. Sharma said awareness programmes of this nature play an important role in encouraging stakeholders to adopt sustainable waste management practices, comply with statutory guidelines and register their dairy units and gaushalas under JMC bylaws.
She appealed to dairy owners to strictly follow CPCB guidelines issued in compliance with NGT directions and ensure that dairy waste is scientifically processed, recycled and utilised for generating renewable energy and high-quality organic manure.
