UDHAMPUR: The PG Department of English at Government Degree College Udhampur staged a compelling and creatively executed dramatic adaptation of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest in the college Multipurpose Hall.
The production, led by M.A. English Semester I students with enthusiastic participation from undergraduate English majors, offered a vivid blend of expressive performances, interpretative depth, and imaginative stagecraft.
Guided by mentors Dr. Nikita Gandotra and Prof. Nitika Mahajan, the students explored the theatrical possibilities of Shakespearean drama, transforming the classic text into an engaging and intellectually stimulating stage experience.
The performance highlighted some of the play’s most memorable moments—the intense opening storm, Prospero’s moving account of his past, Ariel’s magical interventions, the tender encounters between Ferdinand and Miranda, and the comic antics of Caliban, Stephano, and Trinculo. The presentation concluded with an elegantly choreographed Masque, where students combined drama, dance, and expressive movement to deliver a visually captivating finale.
The event was graced by distinguished faculty members of the English Department, including Prof. Tania Akhtar, Dr. Meena Gupta, and Dr. Vijay Kumar. Faculty members from various other departments also attended, appreciating the students’ creativity and describing the performance as refreshing, inspiring, and representative of the college’s growing culture of artistic engagement. They encouraged students to continue participating in dramatic and literary activities, highlighting their importance in holistic academic development.
Undergraduate English majors expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to experience drama as a dynamic, interactive art form rather than merely a classroom text.
