X, formerly known as Twitter, experienced a major global outage on January 16, affecting users across multiple regions including India, the United States and parts of Europe.
According to outage-tracking platforms, reports of service disruption began rising sharply around 6:43 AM IST, indicating a widespread technical issue.
Users reported several problems while trying to access the platform. Many said the mobile application failed to load, displaying blank screens or remaining stuck on continuous loading. Access through desktop browsers was also affected, with users unable to open the website or view content.
Several users complained that their timelines were not refreshing or showing new posts. Posting tweets and replies was also impacted, while some users reported being logged out unexpectedly and facing difficulties logging back into their accounts. The issues appeared to affect both the mobile app and web versions of the platform.
Data from Downdetector showed a sharp spike in complaints, with more than 65,000 reports logged shortly after the outage began. According to the platform, around 50 percent of users reported problems with the X app, 39 percent cited website-related issues, and 11 percent reported problems related to feeds and timelines. Reports emerged simultaneously from multiple countries, suggesting a global outage.
As of the time of filing this report, X had not issued any official statement acknowledging the outage or providing details about the cause. There was also no confirmed timeline for when services would be fully restored.
