POONCH: In a remarkable humanitarian effort, police in Poonch district reunited a mentally unwell woman from Uttar Pradesh with her family after a separation of eleven years.
According to officials, the woman, identified as Leelawati and a resident of the Dwaj area in Uttar Pradesh, had gone missing over a decade ago and was found living in the Surankote area.
Acting on the case, police at Surankote Police Station initiated efforts to ascertain her identity. Despite her limited ability to communicate, the team worked patiently, piecing together clues based on the information she could provide.
Station House Officer Syed Abid Bukhari said sustained efforts, including analysis of fragmented details and coordination with authorities, helped trace her family. Police in Uttar Pradesh were also contacted and extended full cooperation in the process.
Upon confirming her identity, the family was informed and subsequently reached Surankote. After completing all legal formalities, the woman was handed over to her relatives.
The successful reunion has been widely appreciated by the public, who lauded the dedication and sensitivity shown by the police, particularly SHO Syed Abid Bukhari. The effort has been described as a significant example of committed public service by the police.
