JAMMU: Former senior leader of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference and ex-Food Minister Qamar Ali Akhoon passed away on Friday, evoking widespread grief across Jammu and Kashmir’s political circles.
Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Abdul Rahim Rather informed the House about the demise of the veteran leader, stating that Akhoon had dedicated decades of his life to public service and democratic politics.
Hailing from Sangra village in Kargil, Akhoon was regarded as one of the most prominent political figures from the Ladakh region. Over the years, he served in several key capacities, including as a Cabinet Minister, Advisor to the Chief Minister, and the first Chief Executive Councillor of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil. He also handled important portfolios such as Transport and Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution, and later served as Additional General Secretary of the National Conference.
Akhoon served as a Minister for six years and began his political journey at the grassroots level, where he was elected unopposed as a councillor. He was re-elected to the Assembly in the 2008 elections and later inducted as a Minister in the government led by Omar Abdullah, representing the aspirations of the Ladakh region in the Cabinet.
Following the announcement, members across party lines expressed profound sorrow and paid rich tributes to the departed leader, acknowledging his role in promoting public welfare and advocating for people living in remote and high-altitude areas.
The Assembly observed a two-minute silence as a mark of respect and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, praying for eternal peace to the departed soul.
