POONCH: Two rusted mortar shells were recovered from separate forward villages in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Monday and safely destroyed by the Army’s Bomb Disposal Squad, officials said.
In the first incident, villagers spotted an unexploded mortar shell lying in an open field near Chajjla bridge in the Mankote area and alerted the police and security forces.
The area was immediately secured, following which the Army’s Bomb Disposal Squad was called to examine the explosive. The shell was later destroyed in a controlled explosion after completing standard safety procedures.
Another unexploded mortar shell was found in agricultural fields at Adhaki village near Mendhar Nallah. Bomb disposal experts subsequently neutralised the shell safely.
Officials said both shells were believed to be remnants of past cross-border firing along the Line of Control.
