SRINAGAR: Cold wave conditions intensified across Kashmir on Tuesday as Srinagar recorded its coldest night of the season at minus 0.4°C, Met officials said.
“As expected, the minimum temperature dropped further. We are likely to see even colder nights in the coming days as dry weather may persist for at least 15 days,” a MeT department official said.
Gulmarg also recorded -0.4°C, while Pahalgam dipped to -3.4°C. In Jammu region, the minimum temperature was 11.4°C, while Katra recorded 10.4°C, Batote 4.3°C, and Bhaderwah 1.9°C.
The clear night sky and icy winds blowing from snow-covered mountains have led to increasing chill in the valley, although the harshest phase of winter—Chillai Kalan—officially begins on December 21 and lasts till January 30. During this 40-day period, frozen taps, slippery roads, fog, and disrupted movement become part of daily life. Schools also observe winter break due to lack of heating facilities.
