JAMMU: Security was intensified across Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday on the seventh anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, with authorities deploying a multi-layered security grid across the Union Territory.
Additional security measures were also put in place in border districts and other sensitive areas to prevent any disturbance to public order.
Central Reserve Police Force personnel conducted security checks along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Ramban district. Kulgam Police also intensified vehicle checking and identity-card verification on National Highway-44 as part of the heightened security arrangements.
Officials said security agencies were maintaining close surveillance at vulnerable locations, highways, public places and entry and exit points.
Permission for protest demonstrations was not granted at several locations, while police and paramilitary personnel were directed to remain vigilant against any attempt to disrupt peace.
On August 5, 2019, the Central Government abrogated the special constitutional status of Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 and reorganised the erstwhile state into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah had tabled the resolution in the Rajya Sabha, maintaining that the constitutional provision had hindered the region’s development and integration.
Article 370 had granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir and limited Parliament’s legislative powers over the erstwhile state in several areas.
Officials said the security arrangements would remain in force throughout the day, with intensified patrolling, vehicle checks and surveillance continuing across sensitive areas.
