NEW DELHI: Members of Parliament from several INDIA bloc parties on Thursday staged a protest at Makar Dwar in the Parliament complex, demanding a response from Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the alleged police action against students during the July 20 protest in Delhi.
The MPs assembled around 10:30 a.m., carrying placards reading, “Amit Shah sansad se gayab kyun?” and sought an explanation from the Home Minister over the incident.
The protest comes amid a continuing political controversy over the police action during the July 20 “Sansad Chalo” march, when students gathered at Jantar Mantar to protest the alleged 2026 NEET paper leak on the call of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP).
On Wednesday, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge backed Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s demand for accountability, alleging that the BJP government was responsible for what he described as a “lethal attack” on students.
In a post on X, Kharge claimed that pellet guns had been used against students and said either the action was authorised by Union Home Minister Amit Shah or took place without his knowledge, adding that both scenarios reflected irresponsibility.
Rahul Gandhi had earlier alleged that Amit Shah was “either culpable or incompetent” and demanded an independent probe into the incident under the supervision of the Supreme Court.
The Opposition MPs also staged a separate protest over the alleged embezzlement of donations at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
Meanwhile, Parliament completed the passage of the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, after the Rajya Sabha approved it on Thursday. The Lok Sabha had passed the legislation a day earlier following an extended debate marked by sharp exchanges between the Treasury and Opposition benches over examination paper leaks and the handling of student protests.
The amended law seeks to strengthen the legal framework against examination-related malpractices by increasing penalties for paper leaks, providing for the constitution of a Special Task Force to investigate such offences and establishing Special Fast-Track Courts for time-bound trials.
