RAJOURI: Minister for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, IT, Transport, and Youth Services & Sports, Satish Sharma, paid glowing tributes to veterans, war widows and serving personnel during the 10th Veterans’ Day and Ex-Servicemen Day mega rally at Rajouri. The event was organised by the Northern Command of the Indian Army.
The rally was attended by Lieutenant General Prateek Sharma, GOC-in-C Northern Command; Lieutenant General P.K. Mishra, GOC White Knight Corps; Major General Kaushik Mukherjee, GOC 25 Infantry Division; and a large gathering of ex-servicemen, Veer Naris and their families.
Addressing the event, Satish Sharma said Veterans’ Day is a solemn reminder of the unmatched sacrifices made by the Armed Forces in protecting the sovereignty and integrity of the nation. He said the bravery, discipline and professionalism of Indian soldiers have earned global respect for India.
Calling veterans “lifelong torchbearers of patriotism”, he remarked, “Once a soldier, always a soldier. A fauji never truly retires.” He added that courage, discipline and commitment continue to guide society even after soldiers leave service.
Becoming emotional while speaking, Sharma recalled his father, an ex-serviceman, saying he grew up imbibing Army values at home. Even after retirement, his father continued to serve people, reflecting the spirit of lifelong dedication that defines a soldier, he said.
The Minister highlighted the continued contribution of veterans in Jammu and Kashmir towards peace-building, social harmony and youth guidance through initiatives such as Operation Sadbhavana. He said the Union Territory is witnessing a new phase of peace and development due to the sacrifices of the Armed Forces.
Reiterating government commitment to the welfare of ex-servicemen, Sharma said that institutions such as the Army Welfare Placement Organisation, State Soldiers’ Welfare Board, Soldier Assistance Centres and Veer Sainik Assistance Centres are being strengthened to provide employment, legal, medical and rehabilitation support.
He also saluted Veer Naris and families of martyrs, calling their courage a source of inspiration for the nation, and assured continued support from the government and the Army.
On the occasion, specially designed scooters were distributed to disabled soldiers to improve mobility and independence. Sharma personally handed over the scooters and interacted with beneficiaries.
The event also included cultural performances by personnel of the Madras Regiment and Punjab Regiment. The rally concluded with interactions among the Minister, senior Army officers, veterans, NCC cadets and members of the public.
