JAMMU: In a significant move to minimise train delays caused by dense fog during the winter season and to enhance passenger convenience, the Jammu Division of Northern Railway has introduced the facility of “scratch rakes” or additional rakes to ensure timely train operations.
Under this initiative, additional rakes have been arranged for Train No. 12414 (Jammu Tawi–Ajmer) and Train No. 22478/22477 (Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra–New Delhi–Katra). These rakes will be kept ready for deployment in case the original trains are delayed due to heavy fog or other operational issues.
The decision has been taken under the directions of Divisional Railway Manager Shri Vivek Kumar, with implementation led by the Senior Divisional Commercial Manager and Senior Divisional Operations Manager, to maintain punctuality of trains affected by foggy conditions.
The scratch rake facility will be used when trains are delayed by seven hours or more, or in cases of indefinite delays. By deploying an additional rake, the scheduled train service can operate on time, preventing prolonged waiting periods for passengers at stations and ensuring they reach their destinations without inconvenience.
Speaking on the initiative, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Uchit Singhal, said, “This is a significant step taken by the Railways to ensure comfortable and timely travel for passengers during foggy winter conditions. Train delays due to fog are common, and the use of scratch rakes will not only benefit passengers but also help maintain punctual train operations. These additional measures will also support rising passenger demand in the future.”
The introduction of scratch rakes reflects Northern Railway’s proactive planning and efficient management, aimed at improving reliability and passenger satisfaction during challenging winter operations.
