NEW DELHI: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) secured three of the four key posts in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections, with Yash Dabas elected president, while independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen won the vice-president’s post as counting concluded on Saturday.
After 20 rounds of counting, Dabas secured 24,576 votes to defeat National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) candidate Vijay Shankar Meena, who polled 22,523 votes. ABVP’s Riya Chhawdi was elected secretary with 21,650 votes, while Lakshya Raj Singh won the joint secretary post with 16,615 votes.
The vice-president’s contest was won by independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen, a former NSUI member, who secured 30,615 votes. ABVP’s Ishu Maurya received 16,910 votes, while NSUI candidate Vir Chatrath polled 4,313 votes.
The DUSU election results were declared after voting on September 18 and counting on September 19. The election recorded a 40.46 per cent voter turnout, according to reports.
The results give ABVP three of the four central DUSU positions, while the vice-president’s post went to an independent candidate. Delhi University officials had also asked the winning candidates and their supporters not to organise victory rallies in accordance with directions of the Delhi High Court.
