JAMMU: The NSS Unit of MIER College of Education (Autonomous) celebrated NSS Day with zeal and social commitment by organizing a visit to the Home for the Aged and Infirm, Ambphalla, Jammu. The celebration focused on care, companionship, and respect for the elderly, reflecting the NSS motto: “Not Me, But You.”
A total of 23 NSS volunteers from the School of Education and the School of Social Sciences and Humanities presented a vibrant cultural programme. The event began with a formal welcome by Dr. Komal Sharma, NSS Programme Officer, who extended greetings to Dr. Dinesh Gupta, Honorary Secretary; Vijay Gupta, Jt. Secretary; Sat Pal Sharma and R.C. Vaid, Managing Committee members; Rajinder Singh, Life Member; and Dr. Parveen Yograj, Health Specialist.
The programme featured soulful songs from the ’70s, traditional Dogri folk renditions, lively Punjabi tappe, devotional bhajans, and a touching self-composed poem. Traditional dances and interactive games involving the residents spread joy and encouraged participation, with elders and volunteers joining in the Punjabi dance numbers. Each performance aimed to strengthen intergenerational bonds and bring happiness to the residents, whose smiles and enthusiastic responses reflected their appreciation.
Dr. Dinesh Gupta lauded the efforts of the NSS Unit and encouraged more such initiatives. In addition to cultural activities, students and faculty donated a variety of packed food items—biscuits, cakes, juices, rusks, snacks, and digestive drinks—demonstrating sharing, compassion, and care for the residents.
Prof. Adit Gupta, Director and Principal of MIER College, commended the volunteers’ commitment, emphasizing that such programmes instill values of service, empathy, responsibility, and human dignity in youth, which lie at the heart of the NSS philosophy.
The event was conducted by Manpreet and Priyanshi of B.A. (Hons) Psychology Sem III, while Ishika Bali of B.Ed. Sem III delivered the formal vote of thanks. The programme was meticulously planned under the guidance of Dr. Komal Sharma and Ayushi Grover, ensuring its success and meaningful impact.
