BHADERWAH: The annual Mela Patt, dedicated to Lord Vasuki Nag- the presiding deity of Bhaderwah Valley, was celebrated today here at historic Khakhal Mohalla with religious fervour, enthusiasm and traditional gaiety.
Deeply rooted in the cultural and religious heritage of Bhaderwah, the centuries-old festival commemorates the historic meeting between Mughal Emperor Akbar and Raja Nag Pal of Bhaderwah. The traditional celebration continues to attract hundreds of devotees and visitors from different parts of Jammu and Kashmir, cutting across caste, creed and religious identities.
According to local tradition, Mela Patt was first celebrated during the reign of Raja Nag Pal, when Bhaderwah was known as Bhadarkashi. The festival holds a special place in the cultural traditions of the region and is observed annually on Nag Panchami, seven days after the conclusion of the Kailash Yatra.
A key attraction of the festival is the traditional ‘Dikko Dance’, in which men belonging to different communities participate together.
The vibrant traditional performance reflects the region’s rich cultural legacy while conveying a message of peace, brotherhood, mutual respect and communal harmony.
The celebration witnessed enthusiastic participation of devotees and locals, with the historic traditions of the festival adding colour and vibrancy to the occasion. The centuries-old customs associated with Mela Patt continue to connect the younger generation with the cultural heritage and traditions of Bhaderwah.
Members of the Khakhal Mohalla Committee, the main organisers of the event, said that Mela Patt remains an important expression of the region’s cultural identity and longstanding tradition of communal harmony. They highlighted the festival’s role in strengthening the bonds of brotherhood and preserving the rich heritage of Bhaderwah.
Deputy Commissioner Krishan Lal, CPO Manesh Kumar, ADC Sunil Kumar Bhutyal, SDPO, police personnel, Army and CRPF, besides other officers, officials and prominent citizens, were present on the occasion.
