NEW DELHI: The lawyer representing Captain Virender Sejwal, who was involved in an altercation with a fellow passenger at Delhi’s IGI Airport, on Sunday said the incident was resolved on the spot in the presence of CISF officials, with both parties voluntarily agreeing not to pursue legal action.
In a statement, the lawyer said that recent media reports and social media posts had misrepresented the incident, portraying it inaccurately as a “pilot versus passenger” dispute. According to the statement, Captain Sejwal was travelling as a passenger at the time and was not on flight duty, and the matter was purely personal in nature.
The lawyer alleged that the other passenger, Ankit Dewan, selectively presented facts, creating a misleading narrative. The statement further claimed that abusive language, casteist remarks and threats towards Captain Sejwal and his family were used during the altercation, and that Sejwal also sustained injuries during the scuffle.
According to the statement, CISF personnel intervened promptly, attempted to de-escalate the situation and offered both parties the option to lodge formal complaints. However, both declined and signed a written statement voluntarily, confirming that they did not wish to take any legal action.
The lawyer said CISF has also clarified publicly that no coercion was involved and that allegations of bias or force against the security personnel were unfounded.
Stating that the incident has no connection with Captain Sejwal’s professional role or employer, the lawyer said attempts to link the issue with the airline were unwarranted and aimed at sensationalising a settled personal matter. He added that Sejwal has full faith in the authorities and expects the matter to be examined impartially, based on facts rather than social media narratives.
Earlier, Ankit Dewan had alleged that he was assaulted by an Air India Express pilot during security checks at Terminal-1 of IGI Airport while travelling with his family.
Following the allegations, Air India Express expressed regret over the incident, condemned the pilot’s conduct and said he has been removed from duty pending a detailed investigation.
