JAMMU: Expressing deep concern over declining groundwater levels and the gradual disappearance of traditional water bodies, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has launched a focused drive to rejuvenate and restore old ponds across the city.
The initiative aims to revive natural water-holding systems, prevent their degradation, and strengthen urban water security.
As part of this broader vision, JMC has successfully completed the project titled “Rejuvenation of Water Body (Pond) near Chenab College, Ward No. 55.” The pond has been restored using advanced bioremediation techniques, leading to a significant improvement in water quality by breaking down organic pollutants and restoring the ecological balance of the water body.
A key achievement of the project has been the effective curbing of encroachments. Through restoration and proper demarcation of the pond area, illegal dumping and unauthorized occupation of public land have been stopped, safeguarding the natural drainage system and preserving the integrity of the water body.
Highlighting the importance of the initiative, Commissioner, Jammu Municipal Corporation, Dr. Devansh Yadav, said that rejuvenation of urban water bodies is a core priority under JMC’s environmental sustainability agenda. He emphasized that such projects play a vital role in groundwater recharge and water conservation while restoring the ecological and social value of neglected public assets. The Commissioner further stated that JMC is committed to scaling up similar interventions across the city to enhance climate resilience and ensure long-term water security for future generations.
From a hydrological perspective, the rejuvenated pond now contributes significantly to groundwater recharge by facilitating natural rainwater percolation and reducing surface runoff, thereby improving the local water table—an essential step for urban areas facing increasing water stress.
Beyond environmental benefits, the project has enhanced urban aesthetics, public health, and ecological value, providing a cleaner and healthier environment for residents and the academic community of Chenab College. Restored ponds also support biodiversity and help improve the micro-climatic conditions of surrounding areas.
The Jammu Municipal Corporation reaffirmed its commitment to undertaking more such pond rejuvenation and restoration projects as part of its sustainable urban development strategy, reflecting its long-term vision to conserve natural resources and improve the overall quality of life for the citizens of Jammu.
