JAMMU: Under its flagship ‘Wall of Shame’ initiative, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has intensified its efforts to curb public littering and open urination, aiming to promote civic awareness and behavioural change among citizens.
As part of the ongoing campaign, JMC on Wednesday conducted a comprehensive cleanliness and awareness drive at Panjbakhtar Road, in front of a temple—an area earlier identified as a vulnerable spot prone to garbage dumping and open urination. These unhygienic practices had been causing inconvenience to residents and posed serious sanitation and public health concerns, especially in the vicinity of a religious place.
Commissioner, Jammu Municipal Corporation, Dr. Devansh Yadav, interacted with local residents and shopkeepers during the drive and stressed the importance of civic sense, cleanliness, and shared responsibility in maintaining public spaces. He appealed to citizens to refrain from unhygienic practices and extend full cooperation to JMC in its mission to keep the city clean, dignified, and healthy.
Dr. Yadav emphasized that sustained public awareness coupled with strict enforcement is essential to achieve long-term cleanliness goals. He also encouraged citizens to become active stakeholders in safeguarding the city’s sanitation standards.
During the drive, detailed discussions were held with locals to sensitize them about the adverse effects of littering and open urination on public health, environmental hygiene, and the aesthetic appeal of the city. Citizens were urged to act as “cleanliness ambassadors” by motivating others in their neighbourhoods to adopt proper waste disposal practices.
To bring about a visible and psychological transformation of the area, paintings and awareness artwork were created on walls under the ‘Wall of Shame’ initiative. These creative visuals are intended to deter defacement of public spaces while fostering civic pride, cleanliness, and respect for religious and community areas.
Among others, Joint Commissioner (Health & Sanitation) Abdul Sattar, Health Officer Dr. Vinod Sharma, IEC In-charge Dr. Divya Sharma, Assistant Floriculture Officer Dr. Rabia Khan, along with other senior officers, staff of JMC, and local residents actively participated in the drive.
