SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly was adjourned on Monday and will reconvene on Tuesday morning after repeated disruptions and heated exchanges between members during Question Hour.
The House witnessed several interruptions after BJP legislators raised slogans of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Vande Mataram”, drawing reactions from members of the treasury and opposition benches. Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather repeatedly appealed to the protesting members to return to their seats and allow the proceedings to continue.
“Go back to your seats and allow the House to continue with proceedings. Don’t force me to take action against you,” the Speaker warned amid the uproar.
As the disruption continued, Gurez MLA Nazir Ahmad Gurezi urged the Speaker to proceed with Question Hour and accused the BJP members of deliberately wasting the time of the House. He also engaged in a sharp exchange with the protesting legislators.
The situation escalated further when CPI(M) MLA Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami asked the BJP members to raise the slogan “Statehood ko restore karo”, prompting objections from the BJP legislators and a heated exchange in the House.
Langate MLA Sheikh Khursheed also became involved in the commotion, while senior National Conference leader and Khanyar MLA Ali Mohammad Sagar stood up and raised slogans against the BJP members. The repeated exchanges disrupted Question Hour as the Speaker attempted to restore order.
The autumn session of the J&K Legislative Assembly had commenced earlier on Monday, with Speaker Rather appealing to legislators to ensure smooth proceedings and make judicious use of the limited time available during the short session.
Following the adjournment, the Assembly is scheduled to reconvene on Tuesday morning, when legislative business and discussions are expected to resume as per the listed agenda.
