SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly witnessed noisy scenes on Monday as BJP legislators interrupted Question Hour and raised slogans of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Vande Mataram” inside the House.
The disruption came shortly after the commencement of the autumn session, which is scheduled from September 21 to September 30. The Speaker, Abdul Rahim Rather, appealed to the protesting members to allow the proceedings to continue and directed that Question Hour be taken up.
Despite the appeal, BJP members continued raising slogans as questions were taken up in the House. Rather told the members to allow the proceedings to move forward, saying, “You keep going. We will start the Question Hour.”
The session began with obituary references and was scheduled to proceed with Question Hour, followed by other listed business. The Speaker had earlier urged legislators to ensure smooth proceedings and make effective use of the limited sitting days of the session.
The developments added to the charged atmosphere on the opening day of the seven-sitting autumn session, with several issues expected to come up for discussion during the proceedings.
