JAMMU: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the attempted firing incident involving former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and president of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference Farooq Abdullah.
According to an official order, the SIT has been constituted considering the seriousness and sensitivity of the case and will function under the supervision of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Jammu-Samba-Kathua Range.
The seven-member team includes Sanjay Sharma, Irshad Hussain Rather, Arvind Kumar Sambyal, Saroop Singh, Paramjeet Singh, Sanjeev Chib, and Shariq Majeed.
The order constituting the SIT was issued by Inspector General of Police (Jammu Zone) Bhim Sen Tuti, directing the team to conduct a thorough investigation and complete the probe within the statutory timeframe.
The incident took place on March 11 when Farooq Abdullah was attending a marriage function at Royal Park Banquet Hall in the Greater Kailash, Jammu area. At around 10:10 pm, while he was leaving the venue, an individual allegedly flashed a revolver and attempted to open fire from close range. The attempt was foiled due to the prompt action of police personnel accompanying him.
Police registered FIR No. 29/2026 at Gangyal Police Station under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 3/25 of the Arms Act, 1959.
The accused, identified as Kamal Singh, was arrested on the spot. A court later remanded him to five days of police custody and also directed that his medical examination be conducted within 24 hours.
