SHIMLA: A poetry meet titled ‘Sahitya Seva’ was organised at Lok Bhavan under Seva Pakhwada-2026, with Himachal Pradesh Governor Kavinder Gupta stressing the role of literature in promoting social awareness, patriotism and a spirit of service.
The programme was organised jointly by Lok Bhavan and the Himachal Sahitya Evam Sanskriti Manch, with the Governor presiding over the event. Families of freedom fighters from Himachal Pradesh were specially invited and honoured by the Governor.
Addressing the gathering, Gupta said the programme was not merely a poetry meet but an opportunity to connect literature with sensitivity, service and patriotism. He described literature as the voice of society’s soul and said poetry could reflect human emotions, social consciousness and the aspirations of the nation.
He said meaningful poetry not only touches the heart but can also inspire people to contribute to society and the country. When poets highlight social concerns, celebrate nature, remember national heroes, inspire youth or draw attention to social challenges, their creative work becomes a form of social service, he added.
The Governor also recalled the role of literature and poetry in India’s freedom movement, saying they helped generate national consciousness, self-respect and the spirit of freedom.
Referring to the contribution of freedom fighters, Gupta said the India they envisioned was built on their courage, sacrifice and struggle. He noted Himachal Pradesh’s contribution to the freedom movement and said honouring the families of freedom fighters was also a tribute to the ideals and sacrifices of those who fought for the country.
“Nation-building is based not only on rights, but also on duties, sacrifice and responsibility,” the Governor said.
Gupta further said Seva Pakhwada provides an opportunity to make the spirit of service part of everyday life, stressing that service is a collective responsibility of citizens and not that of any single institution or government.
The Governor also recited a poem during the programme, drawing appreciation from the gathering.
Storyteller, novelist and poet S.R. Harnot welcomed the Governor, while Randhir Sharma, MLA from Naina Devi, was also present and honoured the Governor on the occasion.
