LEH: Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Monday inaugurated Ladakh’s first three-tier Multi-Level Stacked Parking Facility at the District Motor Garage in Leh, distributed subsidy cheques to electric-car buyers and flagged off an Electric Vehicle Demonstration Rally, highlighting the UT Administration’s focus on space-efficient infrastructure and cleaner mobility.
The three-tier parking facility, the first of its kind in Ladakh, can accommodate 30 vehicles and has been designed to make better use of limited urban land amid growing traffic and parking pressure in Leh.
Saxena said infrastructure projects in Ladakh must take into account the region’s geography, fragile ecology and growing urban and tourism-related pressures. He emphasised the need for smart infrastructure that can improve public convenience while helping reduce congestion and environmental impact.
The Lieutenant Governor also distributed subsidy cheques to beneficiaries who purchased electric cars under the Ladakh Electric Vehicle and Allied Infrastructure Policy. The policy provides subsidies and incentives to eligible EV buyers, including an Early Bird Incentive offering up to 20 per cent subsidy, subject to prescribed limits.
Saxena congratulated the beneficiaries and expressed hope that wider adoption of electric vehicles would contribute to cleaner transportation in Ladakh.
He also flagged off an EV demonstration rally aimed at assessing the performance and suitability of electric vehicles under Ladakh’s high-altitude, cold-weather and difficult-terrain conditions. JSW MG Motor India, Hyundai Motor India, Kia India and Mahindra & Mahindra are participating in the demonstration.
The Lieutenant Governor said Ladakh’s development must balance increasing tourism and mobility requirements with environmental sustainability. “Ladakh’s development cannot mean simply creating more infrastructure. We have to create better infrastructure and adopt cleaner technologies that are suited to our geography and environment,” he said.
The initiatives form part of the Administration’s broader push for sustainable mobility. In July, the Ladakh Administration inaugurated five EV charging stations across the UT, describing the initiative as a step towards its Carbon Neutral Ladakh objective.
