JAMMU: In a major step toward conserving traditional water bodies and improving civic infrastructure, MLA Jammu North, Shri Sham Lal Sharma, today laid the foundation stone for the conservation, reconstruction, and rejuvenation of Jal Talab located in Ward No. 65, Upper Barnai, under the jurisdiction of the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC).
Commissioner JMC, Dr. Devansh Yadav, was present on the occasion along with senior officers and local representatives.
The rejuvenation project, estimated at ₹35.70 lakh, includes cleaning and desilting of the pond, construction of a walking track, plantation of trees and ornamental plants, and installation of benches and eco-friendly landscaping to make the area more attractive and community-friendly. The initiative aims to restore the ecological balance of the water body while creating a clean and green recreational space for residents.
Addressing the gathering, MLA Sham Lal Sharma appreciated the efforts of JMC and urged residents to maintain cleanliness around water bodies.
“Just as we keep our homes clean, we must also protect our surroundings. Preserving ponds, streams, and natural water sources is everyone’s duty,” he said.
He emphasized that reviving traditional water bodies contributes not only to environmental conservation but also to the cultural identity and heritage of the area.
“With collective efforts, we can revive our heritage and pass it on to future generations,” the MLA added.
On this occasion, over 300 street lights were distributed for installation across the ward to enhance lighting and improve public safety.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Devansh Yadav, Commissioner, JMC, said that the Corporation is actively upgrading civic amenities across all wards.
“Our goal is to make Jammu a cleaner, brighter, and greener city. The installation of streetlights and restoration of water bodies are integral parts of this mission,” he said.
Dr. Yadav informed that JMC has launched a comprehensive plan to restore all traditional ponds, wells, and streams within the city’s limits to ensure groundwater recharge, environmental sustainability, and preservation of heritage assets.
He also announced the launch of a forthcoming initiative — the ‘Cleanliness Champions’ Programme — under which senior citizens and community volunteers will be nominated to monitor cleanliness and provide feedback in their localities.
The event was attended by Joint Commissioner (Works) Firdous Ahmed Qazi, Executive Engineer Division-III Akhil Dutt, Executive Engineer (Electrical) Simran Pal Singh, and other officers of JMC, along with a large number of local residents, senior citizens, and community representatives, who expressed gratitude for the developmental efforts in their area.
