REASI: A Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of the Indian Army, who lost his life in a firing incident in Samba district, was cremated with full military honours at his native village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district on Thursday, officials said.
Subedar Surjeet Singh sustained a gunshot wound inside a military camp in Samba late Tuesday night and later succumbed to his injuries while on duty. His mortal remains were brought to Sarla village in Reasi, where a pall of gloom descended as senior Army, police and civil officers laid wreaths and paid their respects.
Thousands of people from various parts of the district gathered to bid a final farewell to the brave soldier. The mourners joined the funeral procession and raised slogans in praise of the Indian Army and the nation.
Amid emotional scenes and chants of “Shaheed Amar Rahe,” family members, relatives and villagers paid their last respects with tearful eyes. The last rites were performed with full military honours, including a gun salute and the sounding of the last post.
The Rising Star Corps of the Indian Army paid a solemn tribute to Subedar Surjeet Singh. “The Indian Army stands firmly with the bereaved family in this hour of grief and assures unwavering support,” it said in a post on X.
Earlier, a defence spokesperson said the incident is under investigation and that further details will be shared once facts are established. The spokesperson clarified that the terror angle has been ruled out in the incident.
