NEW DELHI: Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Thursday questioned the absence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah from Parliament amid the controversy over the alleged police action against student protesters, alleging that it reflected a reluctance to answer questions in the House.
In a post on X, Gandhi asked why the Home Minister had not appeared in Parliament to respond to the allegations.
“Why is Amit Shah so scared of coming to Parliament and explaining the brutal violence against students? It reeks of guilt,” Gandhi wrote.
The Congress leader’s remarks came hours after he demanded the constitution of an independent, Supreme Court-monitored high-powered committee to investigate the alleged police action during the student protest held at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on July 20.
The Opposition has been seeking accountability over the incident, alleging excessive use of force against student protesters, while the issue has continued to trigger sharp exchanges between the government and the Opposition inside and outside Parliament.
