UDHAMPUR: Two terrorists suspected to be linked to Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) were killed in a late-night encounter with security forces in the Majalta area of Udhampur district in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said. Their identities are being ascertained.
Security forces launched a major cordon-and-search operation in the area after receiving inputs about the suspicious movement of individuals. The operation subsequently turned into a heavy gunbattle between the forces and the suspected terrorists.
In the early hours of Thursday, security forces recovered the bodies of two suspected terrorists, believed to be foreigners and possibly associated with the JeM. Arms and ammunition were also recovered from the encounter site.
The joint operation was conducted by the Rashtriya Rifles, Para (Special Forces) and Jammu and Kashmir Police, with searches continuing in the area following the encounter.
The Majalta gunfight comes days after a Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander was killed in an encounter in the Yousmarg area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district on September 5. The slain terrorist, identified as Yasir, was reportedly associated with the Sulaiman Musa group of the LeT before operating separately.
