SRINAGAR: Fresh snowfall was witnessed at Kabul Gali in north Kashmir’s Gurez Valley on Thursday, while widespread rainfall lashed Kashmir and parts of the Jammu division, bringing a sharp chill to the region and adding a fresh layer of snow across the higher reaches.
Kabul Gali, situated at an altitude of around 4,167 metres, received light to moderate snowfall, covering the high-altitude pass and surrounding areas in white. The pass connects Tulail Valley in Gurez with the Mushkoh Valley towards the Drass sector of Ladakh.
Srinagar recorded 8.2 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, while Qazigund, Pahalgam and Gulmarg received 13.4 mm, 13 mm and 13.2 mm, respectively. Several areas of south Kashmir experienced heavy showers during the period.
Heavy rainfall was also recorded across parts of the Jammu division, with Udhampur receiving 117.8 mm, followed by Jammu with 112.9 mm and Katra with 45.2 mm in the past 24 hours.
The weather activity resulted in a noticeable drop in temperatures, with chilly conditions prevailing particularly across the higher reaches. Despite the snowfall at Kabul Gali, no major disruption was reported.
Travellers heading towards higher-altitude areas have been advised to exercise caution in view of the changing weather and conditions on mountain routes.
