MUMBAI: In a major breakthrough for remote healthcare delivery in India, Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital (HNRFH), Mumbai, in collaboration with the Dhirubhai Ambani Occupational Health & Community Medical Centre (DAOH & CMC), Jamnagar, has launched a pioneering Tele-Robotic Surgery Programme, powered by Reliance Jio.
The initiative marks a transformative step in India’s healthcare landscape by enabling expert surgeons in Mumbai to remotely perform and guide robotic-assisted surgeries at partner medical centres across the country. The programme aims to bring high-precision, specialised surgical care to patients in non-metro and remote regions, significantly reducing the need for long-distance travel.
The first tele-robotic surgery under the programme was successfully performed at the Community Medical Centre, Jamnagar, Gujarat, under the leadership of the hospital’s Director of Urology Oncology, setting a new benchmark in India’s telemedicine and robotic surgery domain.
The platform leverages advanced robotic surgical systems and secure, ultra-low-latency digital connectivity provided by Reliance Jio, ensuring real-time precision, reliability, and seamless clinical collaboration. A multidisciplinary team from HNRFH supported the procedure, while the programme also focuses on continuous mentoring and capacity-building for on-ground medical teams in Jamnagar and surrounding areas.
At an institutional level, the Tele-Robotic Surgery Programme reflects HNRFH’s commitment to digital innovation and equitable healthcare access, while aligning with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat through the use of an indigenously developed Indian robotic surgical system capable of real-time tele-transmission.
Commenting on the launch, Dr Tarang Gianchandani, Group CEO – Healthcare Initiatives and CEO, Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital, said that advanced healthcare should not be limited by geography. He noted that the programme reimagines the delivery of complex surgical care by combining indigenous innovation, advanced robotics, and secure digital infrastructure, ensuring world-class treatment reaches patients closer to home with dignity and trust.
