MUMBAI, June 10: Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) on Tuesday announced a strategic partnership with Meta Platforms, Inc. to develop a large-scale data centre project in Jamnagar, Gujarat, marking a significant milestone in India’s growing role as a global hub for artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Under the agreement, Reliance Industries will develop a 168 MW data centre with an option for future expansion. The facility is expected to be delivered within two years and will serve as Meta’s first built-to-suit data centre capacity in India.
The project represents a major step in Meta’s global infrastructure expansion and further strengthens its long-standing strategic partnership with Reliance, which already spans connectivity, commerce and AI-driven innovation.
Meta will lease capacity from the facility, which will support the company’s global infrastructure requirements, including its rapidly expanding artificial intelligence computing needs. The development highlights India’s increasing importance in the global digital and AI ecosystem.
As part of the partnership, Reliance Industries will provide end-to-end services across the entire lifecycle of the data centre, including design, construction, utility management, renewable energy supply, network connectivity and fully managed operational services.
The project positions Reliance Industries as a comprehensive solutions provider for hyperscale AI infrastructure in India.
Officials said the strategic location in Jamnagar offers several advantages for large-scale data centre operations, including access to renewable energy, water resources, proximity to western submarine cable landing stations and connectivity through Jio’s extensive fibre network.
The facility will operate on renewable energy and utilise desalinated seawater for cooling, reflecting the commitment of both companies towards sustainable infrastructure development.
The partnership is aligned with the Government of India’s vision of promoting data centres as strategic national infrastructure and creating a policy framework aimed at attracting global investments in AI infrastructure.
Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries, Mukesh D. Ambani, described the agreement as a transformative moment for India’s digital infrastructure sector.

He added that Reliance remains committed to developing world-class digital infrastructure capable of supporting the next generation of AI innovation for both India and global markets.

Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, said the company was proud to collaborate with Reliance on its first AI-enabled data centre project in India.

The announcement is being viewed as a major boost to India’s ambitions of becoming a global destination for advanced AI infrastructure, digital innovation and hyperscale computing capabilities.
