NEW DELHI: Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, Ranjeet Kumar Dass called on Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology; Earth Sciences and Minister of State for PMO, Department of Atomic Energy, Department of Space, Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Dr. Jitendra Singh and exchanged views on the changing profile of Northeast , particularly the largest State of Assam, finds an enhanced role in India’s growth story.
During the interaction, Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted the fast-track development taking place in Assam and noted that projects in the State have been put on track with the personal intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi . He emphasised the significance of the pace of development witnessed in the State over the last decade.
Dr. Jitendra Singh underlined the Centre’s priority to promote innovation, scientific research, and technology-driven development in the North Eastern region. Discussions included the potential for expanding science and technology infrastructure in Assam, encouraging start-ups and incubation centres, and promoting scientific temper among youth through programs of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT).
The Union Minister also apprised the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly about various schemes under the Department of Space and Department of Atomic Energy that could be leveraged for development applications in remote and hilly terrains, including the use of geospatial technology for planning, disaster management, and agricultural productivity.
Dr. Jitendra Singh observed that Assam, which earlier figured in the news largely for protests and insurgency-related issues, has witnessed a significant change over the last decade. With peace prevailing, the State has moved beyond its earlier challenges and has increasingly become part of the broader development narrative.
He noted that the people of Assam have not only integrated into the mainstream but that the State has now become an eminent part of India’s growth journey. The changing circumstances have also brought Assam into greater focus, reflecting the development and progress witnessed in the State.
Dr. Jitendra Singh also recalled his association with the region during his seven years in DoNER. The interaction also reflected the transformation taking place in Assam, with the State moving towards a phase marked by peace, development and greater integration with India’s growth journey.
