JAMMU: The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of MIER College of Education, in collaboration with IIT Jammu, organised an interactive workshop on Novel Methods of Assessment at the college campus on Saturday.
The event aimed at equipping faculty with innovative, student-centric approaches to evaluation, moving beyond conventional examination patterns.
The workshop began with a welcome address by Prof. Adit Gupta, Principal, MIER College of Education, who stressed the importance of reimagining assessment practices to nurture creativity, critical thinking, and holistic learning. He underlined the need to align evaluation strategies with contemporary educational demands.
This was followed by an introduction by Dr. Amitash Ojha, HoD, Humanities & Social Sciences, IIT Jammu, who highlighted the workshop’s objectives and emphasised the role of reflective, learner-centered methods in assessment.
The sessions included:
- Project-Based Assessment by Dr. Garima Singh, highlighting real-world projects to enhance creativity, problem-solving, and application of knowledge.
- Peer and Self-Assessment by Dr. Ankita Yadav, stressing collaborative rubric-making and reflective practices to empower learners.
- Gamification and Digital Tools by Dr. Shafkat Shafi Dar, demonstrating platforms like Kahoot and Mentimeter to make evaluation engaging and data-driven.
- Creative Assessment by Dr. Ankit Kathuria, introducing alternatives such as digital storytelling and video presentations to promote critical thinking and communication.
Interactive activities, including an icebreaker on personal exam experiences and group challenges on designing creative assessments, kept participants actively engaged. The workshop concluded with a reflection exercise where faculty pledged to adopt at least one innovative assessment method in their classrooms.
Summarising the key learnings, Dr. Amitash Ojha encouraged faculty to rethink traditional testing models. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Jasleen Mohial, Coordinator IQAC, who acknowledged the contributions of the resource persons and the enthusiastic participation of faculty members.
The workshop was marked by dynamic discussions, practical demonstrations, and collaborative learning, inspiring educators to make assessment more meaningful, interactive, and student-focused.
