SRINAGAR: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday expressed hope that the High Court would take a compassionate view of her petition seeking the transfer of Kashmiri detainees to jails within the Valley.
Mufti has moved the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, requesting that undertrials from Kashmir be lodged in local prisons instead of jails outside the region.
Sharing an undated video on X, the former chief minister highlighted the plight of a woman who claimed she was on her way to Jammu to meet her son, lodged in Kot Bhalwal Jail. The woman, not identified in the video, said she would cover the nearly 270-km journey on foot due to the lack of transport.
Terming the visuals “heartbreaking”, Mufti wrote that the desperation of families travelling long distances to meet imprisoned relatives reflected the “silent suffering” of those whose loved ones are kept far from home.
“It’s why I approached the Honourable High Court to request that undertrials be shifted to their native jails so families can visit them with dignity and support their legal fight. Hoping for a compassionate view,” she said.
