LEH: In a significant move aimed at supporting aspiring youth in remote and border areas, the Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory of Ladakh, Vinai Kumar Saxena, has approved age relaxation for candidates applying for 34 posts of Sub-Inspectors in Ladakh Police.
As per the decision, candidates from areas adjoining the Actual Line of Control (ALC) will receive an age relaxation of 5+2 years. While the standard age limit under the Ladakh Police (Subordinate) Service Recruitment Rules remains 18–28 years, eligible aspirants will now be able to apply up to the age of 35 years. A fresh recruitment notification will be issued reflecting these changes.
The move follows multiple representations from aspirants, as well as social and political groups, highlighting limited employment opportunities and unique challenges faced in the region. Taking cognisance of these concerns, the Lieutenant Governor directed the Chief Secretary—who also serves as Administrative Secretary of the Home Department—to examine the issue and initiate appropriate action.
The decision is expected to provide substantial relief to youth from ALC areas, enhancing their participation in the recruitment process while promoting inclusivity and fair representation in the Ladakh Police.
Emphasising the rationale behind the move, LG Vinai Kumar Saxena noted that candidates from border regions face distinct hardships such as difficult terrain, limited infrastructure, and restricted access to educational resources. He reiterated the administration’s commitment to ensuring equal opportunities and responsive governance, particularly for those in strategically important and underserved areas.
Following the directive, Police Headquarters has been instructed to finalise and notify the Standing Order under Rule 6(3) of the Ladakh Police (Subordinate) Service Recruitment Rules and issue the revised recruitment advertisement accordingly.
