JAMMU: The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) on Sunday launched a ₹66.52 lakh pond restoration project at Sector-F near the Railway Crossing in Sainik Colony, Ward No. 70, as part of the Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) Campaign 2026.
Jammu South MLA Dr Narinder Singh laid the foundation stone for the project in the presence of JMC Joint Commissioner (Works), senior officers, former Deputy Mayor, former councillors and local residents.
The pond is currently in a neglected condition, with accumulated weeds, silt, sludge and solid waste affecting its water-holding capacity and surrounding environment.
The restoration project will include cleaning and desilting, earthwork and re-profiling, dewatering and water management, along with strengthening of embankments through PCC walls and stone pitching.
An RCC filtration chamber, GI chain-link fencing, surface finishing and solar lighting will also be provided to improve the pond’s functionality, safety and overall appearance.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Narinder Singh stressed the importance of preserving traditional water bodies as environmental and community assets. He said ponds play an important role in rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge and maintaining ecological balance.
He appreciated the JMC initiative and said restoration of the pond would provide residents with a cleaner and safer environment while strengthening water conservation infrastructure in Sainik Colony.
The MLA said ongoing development in Sainik Colony was focusing on cleanliness, water conservation, roads and green spaces, adding that the restored pond could serve as a model for rejuvenating similar water bodies across Jammu.
The initiative is part of JMC’s broader “Clean Ponds, Healthy Cities” vision aimed at restoring urban water bodies, improving water retention and groundwater recharge, and creating cleaner and more sustainable neighbourhoods.
Local residents welcomed the project and assured their cooperation in maintaining the cleanliness, safety and upkeep of the restored pond.
