TEHRAN: Iran has announced that the Strait of Hormuz will remain “completely open” for commercial shipping during the ongoing ceasefire in Lebanon.
In a statement posted on X, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the move aligns with the truce, ensuring uninterrupted maritime access. However, he added that vessels must adhere to “coordinated routes” designated by Iranian authorities.
The development was echoed by Donald Trump, who confirmed via Truth Social that the vital shipping lane is “fully open,” welcoming the decision.
The announcement follows Trump’s earlier statement regarding a 10-day ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon, part of broader diplomatic efforts to stabilise the region. He indicated that preparations are underway for a potential meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun at the White House in the coming days.
The ceasefire is being seen as a key step in wider negotiations involving Iran, with Tehran reportedly linking progress on regional de-escalation to developments in Lebanon.
The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil transit chokepoints, plays a vital role in global energy supply, and its reopening is expected to ease concerns over potential disruptions to international trade and oil markets.
