Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Sunday claimed it carried out missile and drone strikes on United States military facilities in Kuwait and Bahrain, describing the operation as retaliation for a second round of US military strikes on Iranian targets earlier in the day.
In a statement carried by Iranian state media, the IRGC said its naval and aerospace forces launched ballistic missiles and drones targeting the Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait and the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet at Port Salman in Bahrain. The IRGC claimed it had destroyed eight key US military installations and described the operation as a “decisive response” to what it called recent American aggression. However, the extent of the reported damage has not been independently verified.
The IRGC also accused the United States of violating a recently agreed ceasefire by launching attacks on five Iranian coastal positions earlier on Sunday. It warned that any further military action against Iran would be met with a “crushing response” and reiterated its position regarding security arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz under a recently negotiated memorandum of understanding.
Earlier, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that American forces had conducted additional strikes against multiple Iranian military targets on the orders of President Donald Trump. According to CENTCOM, the operation targeted surveillance infrastructure, communication systems, air defence sites, drone storage facilities and mine-laying capabilities after Iran allegedly launched a one-way drone attack on the Panama-flagged tanker M/T Kiku near the Strait of Hormuz. The US said the tanker was carrying more than two million barrels of crude oil.
Following the reported Iranian strikes, Kuwait’s Army General Staff said its air defence systems were intercepting hostile missiles and drones and advised residents that explosion sounds were linked to interception operations. Bahrain’s Ministry of Interior said warning sirens had been activated and urged residents to move to safe locations while awaiting further official updates.
According to international media reports, there were no immediate reports of significant damage or US casualties from the Iranian attacks, although the situation remains fluid.
The latest exchange marks the second consecutive day of US military strikes on Iranian targets following a series of attacks on commercial shipping in and around the Strait of Hormuz. The renewed hostilities have further strained a fragile ceasefire agreement and raised concerns over broader regional stability.
