SHIMLA: Internationally acclaimed cyclist and social activist Somen Debnath on Thursday called on Himachal Pradesh Governor Kavinder Gupta at Lok Bhavan, Shimla, and briefed him about his 19-year cycling journey across 191 countries on all seven continents.
Debnath told the Governor that his global journey was undertaken to spread awareness on important social issues and carry the spirit of Indian culture and values across the world.
He also apprised the Governor of his ongoing year-long nationwide campaign, “Reunion Bharat – One Tree, One Life, Indian Youth and Sports,” covering 28 States and five Union Territories.
The campaign seeks to promote national unity, environmental responsibility, youth empowerment and sports.
Governor Kavinder Gupta praised Debnath’s achievement as a rare example of endurance, discipline and purpose.
He said the mission reflected the spirit of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat” and observed that such initiatives help strengthen the values of unity, discipline and service to the nation.
The Governor also said Debnath’s journey could inspire young people to engage more deeply with sports and environmental responsibility.
In recognition of his contribution, Gupta announced ₹51,000 from Lok Bhavan to encourage Debnath in the successful completion of his mission.
The Governor extended his congratulations and best wishes to Debnath and expressed hope that his journey would continue to inspire youth across the country.
Debnath thanked the Governor for his encouragement and support.
