SRINAGAR: A stone sculpture of a Hindu deity, believed to be several centuries old, has been discovered in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district, officials said.
The artefact, thought to depict either Lord Vishnu or Lord Surya, was found on the outskirts of Gulmarg during a routine patrol by personnel from Gulmarg Police Station.
Police officials said the sculpture, finely carved in stone, is indicative of the region’s rich cultural and historical heritage. The artefact was secured and subsequently handed over to the Directorate of Archives, Archaeology and Museums for proper conservation and documentation.
A team from the Directorate, headed by Javed Ahmad Mattoo, received the sculpture following coordinated efforts to ensure its preservation. Police said swift action was taken to safeguard the relic and facilitate its transfer to experts for examination.
Officials noted that the recovery highlights the Jammu and Kashmir Police’s commitment to protecting archaeological assets and raising awareness about the region’s historical legacy.
