JAMMU: The Department of Cardiology at AIIMS Jammu has successfully carried out a high-precision, life-saving intervention on a patient suffering from Non-ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction, marking a major milestone in advanced cardiac care in the region.
The complex procedure involved Left Main bifurcation stenting in a heavily calcified lesion—considered one of the most challenging scenarios in interventional cardiology. The patient’s condition was critical, with diagnostic imaging revealing dense calcium deposits that made conventional stenting highly risky.
The intervention was performed by Dr. Zubair Farooq and Dr. Mayank Saini using cutting-edge Intravascular Lithotripsy technology. IVL uses sonic pressure waves to safely break down calcium deposits within arterial walls, enabling precise stent placement and restoration of optimal blood flow without damaging surrounding tissue.
The procedure was supported by the Cath Lab technical staff and specialized nursing team, ensuring smooth execution and patient safety.
Executive Director and CEO Dr. D. N. Sharma congratulated the cardiology team, stating that the achievement reflects the institute’s growing capability to deliver world-class cardiac care. He emphasized that the use of innovative technologies like IVL highlights AIIMS Jammu’s commitment to excellence and advancement in healthcare services.
The achievement also underscores rapid progress in the cardiology department, which has performed nearly 150 cardiac and peripheral procedures—including angioplasties, implantable device procedures, and vascular interventions—since the commissioning of its Cardiac Cath Lab three months ago, positioning AIIMS Jammu as an emerging center of excellence in cardiovascular care in North India.
