JAMMU: In a significant medical achievement, the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology at AIIMS Jammu has successfully performed a highly complex re-do liver surgery on a 58-year-old female patient with a recurrent neuroendocrine tumor, highlighting the institute’s growing expertise in advanced hepatobiliary care.
The patient had earlier undergone a left lateral hepatectomy in 2021 at another hospital for a tumor in segments 2 and 3 of the liver. She later developed a recurrence in segments 6 and 7, requiring further surgical intervention. After evaluation at AIIMS Jammu and a multidisciplinary team review, surgical resection was planned. Advanced liver imaging and volumetric assessment were carried out to ensure sufficient postoperative liver function.
Considering the complexities associated with prior surgery, including dense adhesions, altered anatomy, and higher risk of complications, the surgical team undertook detailed preoperative planning. The patient subsequently underwent a right posterior sectionectomy to remove the recurrent tumor.
The procedure was led by Dr. Sahil Sandal, Assistant Professor and Officiating Head of Surgical Gastroenterology, along with Dr. Akash Salaria. The anesthesia team was led by Dr. Slomi Gupta, whose coordinated efforts ensured the successful outcome of the surgery.
Describing the case as technically demanding, Dr. Sandal noted that previous surgeries significantly increase complexity, but careful planning and a coordinated multidisciplinary approach enabled a successful result. A team of surgeons, anesthetists, and critical care specialists worked closely to provide comprehensive perioperative care. The patient was discharged on the ninth postoperative day.
Executive Director and CEO Dr. D N Sharma termed the successful surgery a major milestone for the institution, emphasizing its capability to handle complex liver cases locally and reduce the need for patients to seek specialized treatment outside the region.
