JAMMU: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jammu observed World Cancer Day 2026 with a series of meaningful, patient-centric initiatives under the theme “United by Unique,” underscoring that while every cancer journey is personal, collective support remains universal.
The observance was held under the visionary leadership of Prof. (Dr.) D.N. Sharma, Executive Director & CEO, and Prof. (Dr.) Shabab Lalit Angurana, Dean Research & Head, Department of Radiation Oncology. The programme reflected a strong institutional commitment to comprehensive oncology care, with active participation from the Department of Surgical Oncology led by Dr. Paras Khanna, and Dr. Girija Priya Sharma, Assistant Professor, Radiation Oncology.
A highlight of the event was the “Human Experience” session, where patients and caregivers shared deeply moving personal stories. Patients spoke about their individual battles with cancer, emphasizing that while treatment protocols may be standardized, the emotional journey is profoundly personal. Caregivers highlighted the psychological and physical challenges of supporting loved ones, reinforcing the belief that no one walks alone. Many families expressed heartfelt gratitude for the compassionate care provided by AIIMS Jammu’s nursing staff, residents, and faculty.
As part of pre-event activities, a Poster Competition was organized on February 3 to promote creative advocacy on cancer awareness and prevention. Students and staff participated enthusiastically, conveying powerful messages through art, with prizes awarded to outstanding entries. In addition, awareness sessions were conducted by healthcare professionals, stressing the importance of early diagnosis, multidisciplinary treatment approaches, and emotional support throughout cancer care.
The observance concluded with symbolic gestures of solidarity, including the distribution of care baskets to patients and caregivers. A ceremonial cake-cutting and balloon release marked the closing of the event, symbolizing hope, resilience, and AIIMS Jammu’s unwavering commitment to patient-centered cancer care.
Through these initiatives, AIIMS Jammu reaffirmed its dedication to community awareness and compassionate healthcare, standing firmly with every individual affected by cancer—United by Unique.
