JAMMU: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences Jammu (AIIMS Jammu) organized a first-of-its-kind body donation awareness programme, marking a significant step towards promoting voluntary body donation for medical education and research.
The initiative, led by the Department of Anatomy, aimed to sensitize the public and encourage informed participation in this noble cause.
Addressing the gathering, D. N. Sharma, Executive Director and CEO, congratulated the department for organizing the pioneering programme. He emphasized that body donation is among the highest forms of service to humanity, as donated bodies are fundamental to medical education.
He highlighted that hands-on learning through cadaveric dissection enables medical students to develop the competence and confidence required for safe clinical practice. He further noted that body donation contributes significantly to advanced surgical training and research, ultimately improving patient care and strengthening the healthcare system.
In her address, Shalika Sharma, Officiating Head of the Department of Anatomy, described body donation as a noble and selfless act essential for shaping skilled doctors and advancing medical science.
She said the initiative aims to raise awareness, dispel misconceptions, and encourage voluntary participation, adding that such programmes will support the growth of AIIMS Jammu as a center of excellence while benefiting future generations of medical professionals.
The programme also featured a “nukkad natak” performed by first-year MBBS students, effectively addressing myths and engaging the public. Informational materials and pledge forms were distributed among attendees.
The event was organized with the collective efforts of faculty members of the Department of Anatomy, including Dr. Reeha Mahajan, Dr. Sushant Swaroop Das, Dr. Harsimranjit Singh, Dr. Sanjay Rampravesh Mishra, Dr. M. Ramkumar, and Dr. Monali Hiwarkar.
The initiative is expected to create lasting awareness and foster a positive outlook towards body donation in the region.
