JAMMU: In a major step towards modernising the city’s urban water-supply infrastructure, Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) Commissioner Dr Devansh Yadav on Thursday inaugurated an AI-based Monitoring and Automation System designed to strengthen real-time monitoring, operational efficiency and management of water-supply infrastructure across Jammu.
The initiative, undertaken in coordination with the Jal Shakti Department, aims to ensure a more reliable and uninterrupted water supply to citizens through greater use of advanced technology. Under the project, 418 AI-based panels are being installed at various tubewells and pumping stations in the PHE Jammu urban area under JMC City Grants at an estimated cost of ₹5.83 crore.
A key component of the system is the integration of Artificial Intelligence with Electrical Signature Analysis (ESA) to continuously monitor electrical and operational parameters of pumps and motors. Through a mobile application, PHED engineers will be able to remotely switch pumps on or off and monitor pumping stations in real time, including pump status, electrical parameters, trip conditions and other critical operational indicators.
The technology will also provide automated protection and alerts against dry running, overloading, reverse phase, phase imbalance, voltage and frequency fluctuations and short circuits. Anti-theft, intruder and tamper alerts have also been incorporated into the system to strengthen the security of critical water-supply infrastructure.
AI-based analysis will enable early identification of pump health issues and abnormal operating conditions, facilitating predictive and preventive maintenance. The system is expected to reduce equipment downtime, improve asset utilisation and enhance energy efficiency by enabling timely intervention before major faults occur.
Another significant feature is AI-based flow estimation, under which water discharge can be assessed through electrical parameters and power correlation, reducing exclusive dependence on conventional flow sensors.
The initiative is aligned with the broader vision of the Government of India’s AI Mission to harness Artificial Intelligence for improved governance, public-service delivery and operational efficiency. The technology-driven intervention is ultimately expected to benefit the people of Jammu through improved monitoring, faster response to faults, reduced downtime, efficient energy utilisation and more dependable water-supply services.
