JAMMU: In a significant step towards strengthening train safety and operational efficiency, the Jammu Division of Northern Railway is set to install a state-of-the-art Desktop Simulator at the Jammu Lobby to provide advanced, workplace-based training to Loco Pilots.
The initiative is aimed at enhancing the technical skills, operational preparedness and decision-making abilities of Loco Pilots by providing them with a realistic training environment without the risks and costs associated with repeated practice on actual locomotives.
The Desktop Simulator will enable Loco Pilots to virtually experience a wide range of operational conditions, including dense fog, heavy rainfall, landslides, signal failures and other adverse situations that can pose challenges during train operations. Such simulation-based training is expected to improve their preparedness for handling difficult situations safely and efficiently.
The simulator will also facilitate intensive practice in signalling, braking techniques and locomotive operations, helping Loco Pilots strengthen their technical proficiency. Special emphasis will be placed on emergency response, enabling them to develop quick and safe decision-making skills in situations such as brake failure, overshooting signals and sudden obstructions on the track.
Apart from improving safety, the facility will provide a cost-effective and environment-friendly training mechanism. Unlike training on actual locomotives, simulator-based practice does not require fuel consumption or extensive operational resources and allows Loco Pilots to repeatedly practise specific scenarios in a controlled environment.
The facility is also expected to strengthen regular skill development, refresher training and induction programmes for new Loco Pilots. By allowing trainees to identify operational shortcomings and work on them through repeated simulation exercises, the system will contribute towards building greater confidence and competence among operating staff.
The initiative assumes added significance as the Jammu Division has also been undertaking awareness programmes focused on the mental health and welfare of Loco Pilots. Strengthening training infrastructure alongside employee welfare measures is being viewed as an important component of ensuring safe and efficient train operations.
The Jammu Division is continuing its efforts to reinforce the Indian Railways’ “Safety First” approach, with the new simulator expected to enhance the preparedness of Loco Pilots and contribute further towards ensuring the safety of passengers and railway operations.
