MUMBAI: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Thursday issued a statement regarding HDFC Bank following the resignation of its part-time Chairman, Atanu Chakraborty, amid recent developments at the country’s largest private sector lender.
The central bank said it has approved a transition arrangement for the position of part-time Chairman, as requested by the bank. It also underlined that HDFC Bank, designated as a Domestic Systemically Important Bank (D-SIB), continues to maintain strong financials, a professionally managed board, and competent leadership.
According to the RBI’s periodic supervisory assessments, there are no material concerns regarding the bank’s governance or conduct. The regulator added that the lender remains well-capitalised, with adequate liquidity and a sound overall financial position. It further stated that it will continue to engage with the bank’s board and management going forward.
Following the development, HDFC Bank held an analyst and investor call at 09:00 IST on March 19, 2026, to address concerns and provide clarity regarding the resignation and its implications. The interaction assumes significance as investors closely monitor leadership changes in major financial institutions.
The market reaction, however, reflected caution. Shares of HDFC Bank declined sharply during Thursday’s trading session, falling by more than 4 per cent as investor sentiment weakened following the announcement. The stock was trading at around ₹804 per share, down from ₹846 at the previous close.
Despite the decline, HDFC Bank remains a key player in India’s banking sector, with a market capitalisation of over ₹12 lakh crore. Further cues from the bank’s management and regulatory engagement are expected to shape investor sentiment in the near term.
