NEW DELHI: IndiGo on Tuesday announced that its Chief Executive Officer Pieter Elbers has stepped down from his position with immediate effect, months after the airline faced large-scale flight disruptions across India.
In a statement, the airline said the Board of Directors of InterGlobe Aviation thanked Elbers for his contribution and service to the organisation and wished him well for the future.
“With immediate effect, Pieter Elbers will be stepping down as InterGlobe Aviation Limited’s (IndiGo) CEO. The Board of Directors would like to thank Pieter for his contribution and service to the organisation and wishes him well in his future endeavours,” the statement said.
The airline further announced that Managing Director Rahul Bhatia will take charge of the company’s affairs on an interim basis until a new leader is appointed.
“Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of IndiGo, shall in the interim assume management of the affairs of the airline until such time that the company announces the arrival of a new leader, which is expected shortly,” the release added.
The development comes three months after a wave of flight cancellations in December 2025 disrupted air travel across India, leaving thousands of passengers stranded and drawing scrutiny from regulators.
Commenting on the transition, Chairman of the Board Vikram Singh Mehta said Rahul Bhatia’s return to operational leadership would help strengthen the airline’s culture and reinforce its focus on operational excellence and customer service.
Bhatia said that having founded and nurtured IndiGo for more than two decades, he feels a deep sense of responsibility toward the airline’s customers, employees and stakeholders.
He added that the airline would continue to focus on strengthening service excellence, operational reliability and its long-term goal of building a globally respected airline serving India and its people.
