NEW DELHI: Aadhaar-based biometric authentication has become mandatory for domestic LPG consumers seeking to book the regular 14.2-kg cylinder at the regulated retail price with applicable subsidy, with the new rule coming into effect from Thursday.
Consumers who have already completed Biometric Aadhaar Authentication (BAA), commonly known as Aadhaar e-KYC, can continue booking their domestic LPG refills as usual.
Those who have not completed authentication will not be able to book the subsidised 14.2-kg cylinder but can purchase LPG at the applicable market price through 5-kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) or 10-kg composite fibre cylinders, subject to availability with their oil marketing company.
According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, 27.43 crore active domestic LPG consumers, or 89.9 per cent of the total, had completed biometric authentication as of September 19.
Consumers yet to complete the process can do so during cylinder delivery, at their LPG distributor’s showroom or through the official mobile applications of state-run oil marketing companies. Indane users can use IndianOil ONE, Bharatgas customers can use HelloBPCL, while HP Gas consumers can authenticate through HP PAY.
The government said the measure is aimed at ensuring that subsidised LPG reaches genuine and eligible households while helping curb the diversion of domestic cylinders for commercial or industrial use and identify duplicate or ineligible connections.
Meanwhile, LPG prices were revised from October 1. The price of a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder in Delhi increased by ₹62.50 to ₹2,810, while the 5-kg FTL cylinder became ₹15.50 costlier at ₹779.50.
There was no change in the price of the regular 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder. The government said the implicit subsidy on the cylinder was around ₹210 in September, compared with ₹721 in June.
The Centre is also providing ₹30,000 crore in compensation to public sector oil marketing companies during FY 2025-26 and FY 2026-27 to offset losses incurred on domestic LPG supplies.
