SRINAGAR: More than 4,000 people involved in the drug trade have been arrested in Jammu and Kashmir since April as part of the ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan’, Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat said on Thursday.
Addressing participants of the ‘Run for Unity’ event in Srinagar, Prabhat said police have registered 3,257 cases under the NDPS Act since April 11, when Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha launched the campaign in Jammu.
“Around 4,000 individuals have been arrested and 170 convictions have been secured,” the DGP said, adding that more than 2,500 cases have already been disposed of.
Jammu and Kashmir has also recorded significant action in terms of property attachments. Prabhat said 288 properties linked to the drug trade have been attached, placing J&K at the top nationally in this category.
The value of the attached properties stands at around ₹138 crore, while police have also seized ₹80 lakh in cash, he said.
The DGP further said 144 accused persons had been booked under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (IT-NDPS), which he described as the highest number among states and Union Territories.
Prabhat said the police were simultaneously continuing counter-terror operations and efforts to prevent crime, detect criminal activities and maintain law and order.
He described September as a month of significant operational achievements for the force, saying the progress extended beyond counter-terror operations to wider policing and public safety measures.
The ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan’ is aimed at combating substance abuse among young people and strengthening efforts to make Jammu and Kashmir drug-free.
